Verizon iPhone may not be a reality after all

29 August, 2010

Verizon iPhone may not be a reality after all. Fresh rumors strengthen that Apple will be introducing a CDMA iPhone, not for Verizon Wireless, but for Sprint Nextel. It is not yet a time to make a conclusion on the reports. No Apple or any cellular carrier has officially responded on the matter.

Recent rumors from some reliable sources indicate that Apple is in elaborate plans to avail its flagship smartphone iPhone 4 on a number of cellular carriers in the U.S. Until now, iPhone has been exclusively available on AT&T network only. Apart from Sprint Nextel, which depends on CDMA technology, Apple plans to launch iPhone on GSM-based T-Mobile too.

New rumors are led by Kaufman Bros’ analyst Shaw Wu, who stated that Apple has been in talks with Verizon for a tie-up. However there are some possibilities that Apple will launch iPhone on Sprint and T-Mobile also. Sometimes it may be instead of Verizon, in addition to Verizon.

These rumors are long-rooted. Earlier, when Sprint dropped Google’s Nexus One smartphone, analysts said that the carrier was getting ready to run CDMA iPhones.

Anyway it is analyzed that arrival of iPhone on more than one carrier in the U.S. will of course drop the price of iPhone device. As of now AT&T sells iPhone at a higher price when compared with Verizon Wireless’ pricing of HTC and Motorola Android phones.

Hence spreading of iPhones on several carriers will help iPhone customers, but it will be a bane for AT&T, which will lose its three-year-old exclusive deal with Apple to market iPhones.
