Two moons 2010 & Mars August 2010: double moon August 27: Did not really happen, hoax. The rumor is once again going round the web that on August 27, 2010, the Mars will appear so big in the sky that it will look as if Earth has two moons.
There is an email going around the internet that says "it will look like the Earth has two moons" and "NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN," all in capital letters.
"An email was circulated with this information, but unfortunately the part about the telescope was dropped off and people only passed on the 'size of moon' part," said Geza Gyuk, astronomer at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois.
However, NASA sent out an email late Tuesday night, saying that on August 27, 2010, Mars will be "314 million km from Earth, about as far away as it can get." NASA also added that this rumor originated back in 2003 and has been circulating every year since then.
On August 27, 2003, Mars was 56 million kilometres away from Earth which is considered to be the closest it has ever been to Earth in 60,000 years. However, it was not so near as to appear like a moon.
However, you can enjoy another amazing sight when Venus, Mars, and Saturn will make a nice group on the western horizon as night falls.
