The American movie review: The American tops weekend box office. George Clooney thriller "The American" hits the North American box office. The spy story drew maximum gains to beat the reigning "Takers" in the Labor Day weekend. The initial figures show that the movie has collected around $13 million on Friday and the Sunday gross has reached to $16.1 million.

Since its release on Wednesday, "The American" had shown steady growth in the box office. According to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations estimates, in coming days numbers will go up to $16 million for and reach $20 million total.

Slipping down to $11.5 million, the last week’s top gainer "Takers" fell to second place and is expected to reach close to $14 million for the holiday. The movie stared by Hayden Christensen, Idris Elba and singers Chris Brown and T.I failed to continue its success in the second week after release.

Meanwhile, exploitation revenge thriller "Machete," could gain $11.3 million and aims to bank $14 million four-day total. The movie directed by Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis brings back the trend of violence from 1970s.

"The Last Exorcism" came in the fourth place gaining $7.5 million for the three-day holiday.  $9 million is the expected target to close while $34 million will be the grand total. The thriller director Daniel Stamm and co-producer Eli Roth couldn’t bring much dollars to the camp.

"Going the Distance" was the fifth player opening to $6.8 million through Sunday. And industry predictors won’t expect more than $8.5 million for the four-day weekend.
