Prop 8 or proposition 8 overturned: gay marriage ban overturned by the judge

5 August, 2010

SAN FRANCISCO:  Prop 8 or proposition 8 overturned: gay marriage ban overturned by the judge. Gay rights advocates tasted victory after a judge struck down California's ban on same-sex marriage. The ruling has been called historic by groups who support same-sex marriage. However, sociologists say the triumph is a temporary one in a long fight.

This is just the beginning as it may be dragged to the US Supreme Court. Opponents of the plan seek a reversal at the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

But many gays and lesbians are celebrating the verdict. They say it will encourage same sex people in the region. Following this ruling Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker is at the center of attraction. The war is fully drawn with the backers of the marriage ban sure of victory.

However, Kristin Perry of Berkeley hailed the decision. For ten years she has been planning to marry her partner but due to the law she was stopped. But it looks the new ruling will give her some encouragement.

Perry said: “Today, every American should be proud. For so long, Sandy and I and our family have been regarded as 'less than,' 'unequal' and not worthy of liberty and the pursuit of happiness under the law. But this decision says that we are Americans, too. We too should be treated equally. Our family is just as loving, just as real and just as valid as everyone else's.”
