Washington: Obamas healthcare bill sharply divides the US. Amid the flood of criticisms from various corners, a massive rally was taken out in downtown Washington in support of Obama's new healthcare policy. Thousands of people marched through downtown the city raising slogans against health insurance firms and requesting to give support for Obama healthcare overhaul.
"We want a foot in the door. That is what the bill is," said a person, who lined up in the march.
The rally was targeted at a policy conference by the advocates of private insurance sector at Ritz-Carlton hotel at 22nd and M streets NW. The conference was held to take strategic decisions in the wake of Obama's plan to halt insurance providers from raising premium rates. The rally, which was called as a mock "citizen's arrest" of executives in insurance sector carried several posters depicting the executives as monsters.
Police have placed barricades in front of the hotel to stop demonstrators. Organizers of the rally claimed that they have brought about 5,000 people from across the nation to the demonstration, which was originated from Dupont Circle. Several political activists addressed the demonstrators.
"We deserve a vote...This is a vote about one thing--are you for the insurance companies or for the American people", it was the comment from former Vermont governor and physician Howard Dean while addressing the demonstrators. He meant that lawmakers should give vote for the new legislation for the sake of American people.
