Obama's plan to scarp the most celebrated human mission to the Moon has struck people in Huntsville in fear of massive job loss. The $100 billion mission, Constellation Program is based at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, where more than 2,500 people are working associated with the project.
Obama's decision to cut back budgets for many huge projects all over the country to fight financial deficit has put a brake to the large human back-on-the-moon mission. President has sought the possibility for a private partnership to develop technologies and aircraft required to take human into the Moon and Mars.
New turns in the high-profile project, which was conceived by the former president George W Bush have made large waves in Huntsville. More than paycheck concerns, people also take the issue as prestige problem for America.
"People here care about going to the moon. The last thing they want to do is have our astronauts become cargo on some company's space ship," said Dale Jackson, host of a radio show WVNN in Huntsville, which is also called "Rocket City."
Tommy Battle, Huntsville Mayor has so far requested Obama to recheck the decision to halt the program. Sen. Bill Nelson, chairman of the Senate space subcommittee announced the he will hold a hearing to find whether Congress can help to retain some of the Ares rocket programs.
