JFK condolence letters published, unravel how much people loved him

9 March, 2010

CONCORD, N.H: JFK condolence letters published, unravel how much people loved him. The historic letters written to US President John F. Kennedy’s widow after he was murdered in 1963 can now be accessed by common readers.

For the first time these iconic letters have been published. Modern historians say that some 1.5 million condolence letters were written by President’s fan.

One of his fans was so shocked by the accident that week after week for six months she wrote condolence letters to Jacqueline Kennedy.

The 11-year-old Jane Dryden wrote: "I know that you hate the whole state of Texas. I do to.  I wish I lived in Washington, D.C. where maybe I could maybe see you standing on your porch. I am determined to move there as soon as I can. I would feel safer there."

The letter was addressed in January 1964 to Jacqueline. Shockingly the volume of the letters was so much that a large number of it had to destroyed. Some 800,000 letters in the first seven weeks were enormous. Officials had no idea where to store it. Among the 2000,000 pages that ended up to the John F Kennedy Library in Boston contained letter of Dryden. There was no one to read them or study them until historian Ellen Fitzpatrick decided to study them. It was after this that he wrote a book "Letters to Jackie: Condolences From a Grieving Nations." HarperCollins published it last week.
