The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said in a statement that the Fund "stands ready to do its part with appropriate support in our areas of expertise." "I have already asked staff to look into all the possibilities. We will coordinate with other international agencies, and mobilize our assistance as quickly as possible," he added.

He voiced confidence that the international community will mobilize quickly to offer support to help Haiti.

For his part, World Bank Robert Zoellick affirmed that the Bank was already mobilizing its resources to help the country respond to the catastrophe.

He stressed "This is a shocking event and our thoughts are with the Haitian people at this terrible time." Zoellick affirmed that the institution was ready to mobilize a team to help assess damage and losses and plan recovery and reconstruction.

The Bank stands ready to help with financial assistance, he affirmed.

The International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank arm that provides interest-free credits and grants to the worlds poorest countries, has provided, since January 2005, a total of USD 308 million for Haiti.

The Haitian prime minister told CNN earlier today that several hundred thousand people are feared dead in the powerful earthquake.
