Blasphemy law in Pakistan

5 January, 2011

By Khabrein.Info News Desk,

Blasphemy laws have been at the centre attraction in Pakistan. Once again they are generating heated debate in the country after a minister raised the issue. However, no changes could be made because of its support among many religious parties in Pakistan.

Blasphemy laws are stringent and people defiling a place of worship could be punished. Besides, under this law display of sacred object outraging religious feelings is also punishable. Moreover, several sections of Pakistan's Criminal Code comprise its blasphemy laws.

Of them 295, 295-A, 295-B and others are important. 295-B forbids defiling the Quran. 295-C forbids defaming Muhammad. Many of the laws are based on the accused intent. If anybody is held responsible for defiling the religious book of Islam that person could be imprisoned. Besides, people defaming the Prophet Muhammad (PUB) can get death terms with or without a fine.

However, there have been many cases in which it is learned that people have willfully accused a person of blasphemy. Many cases have surfaced in which a person has tried to implicate another on blasphemy case because of its seriousness.

There are certain issues in which a person cannot get away without being punished. Many Christian groups in Pakistan have accused the government of misusing the law to victimize minorities in the country. Most of the cases till now have surfaced against Christian community.

That is why on and off voices have been raised against it. Many human rights activists have demanded it to be removed. But till now the government has failed to oblige them.
