Mukkam: An orphan living in an orphanage is set to be among the top bureaucrats in the country. with this feat he has not just brought fame to him but the orphanage too where he grew up and that nurtured him.
I am not sure if many had heard the name of Mukkam Muslim Orphanage (MMO) outside the place called Mukkam. There is not much to say about this small orphanage being run by a Muslim charitable organization.
But it was till Muhammad Shihab brought this small orphanage in Kozhikode district to fame by clearing the tough Indian Administrative Services (IAS) exams.
One of its former wards, Muhammad Shihab won 226th place in the 2011 I.A.S exams. The orphanage, which runs several educational institutes and provides advanced accommodation facilities for its residents, undertook Shihab and his sisters in 1991.
Shihab completed courses like pre-degree, T.T.C, graduation and BE.d with the support of MMO. He has been serving as a teacher at Muthuvalloor High School. Shihab is a very bright student that he managed to qualify 21 PSC tests in as many tests he attended. The energetic and hardworking student has finally accomplished his dream of clearing I.A.S exam. MMO has been carrying all expenses for Shihab even for his I.A.S preparations.
The Mukkam Muslim Orphanage is a well reputed institution that situates in Mukkam, 35 kms away from Kozhikode city. Its institute, which was established in 1956, strives to provide a better living condition for the hapless orphans. Besides from LKG to the 10th standard, MMO also provides courses like +2, VHSE, ITC, TTC, Tailoring, degree, B-Ed, PG, Poly technique, Afzal Ul Ulama etc.
The orphanage also avails medical and engineering entrance coaching to eligible students. The institute was awarded with the National Award in 1982 and 2008 for excellence in child welfare from the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
