Mumbai, July 2, 2009: Tyeb Mehta, Indian art's best bet is dead. A film editor by profession, and an aspiring painter by interest, Tyeb Mehta, one of the most acclaimed artists in the history of Indian art. Kapadvanj district, Gujrat in the July of 1925, he later joined Sir J.J.School of Art, Mumbai to pursue art as a career.

Tyeb Mehta, one of India's most critically acclaimed artists, died of a cardiac arrest here early Thursday, according to family sources. He was 84.

The artist is survived by his wife Sakina, son Yusuf and a daughter, and the family lives in Versova, Andheri west.

Mysore, July 2 (IANS) Three people were killed Thursday in clashes over the desecration of a mosque in this Karnataka city.

The three - Zubaiullah (15), Yasir (35) and Tirupati (40) - died of stab wounds following the clash in the Udayagiri suburb of Mysore, about 140 km from the state capital Bangalore.

Tensions erupted over the desecration of the Alima mosque in Kyathamaranahalli locality when worshippers found the carcass of a swine, according to police.

New Delhi, July 2 (IANS) Gay sex Thursday won legal sanction in India after the Delhi High Court passed a landmark ruling that was hailed by gay rights activists but denounced by religious leaders as an assault on God.

In a judgment that followed eight years of judicial battle, the Delhi High Court read down section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), quoting Jawaharlal Nehru to emphasise that the constitution guaranteed homosexuals rights equal to what other citizens enjoy.

In a courtroom packed with around 100 people, half of them activists, Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar said that if not amended, section 377 would violate article 21 of the Indian constitution, which states that every citizen has equal opportunity of life and is equal before law.
